Home » About PAU
Pacific Adventist University (PAU) has been preparing its graduates for service for over 40 years. Our extraordinary graduates continue to lead meaningful change all over our planet.
The beginnings of an education centre started in the mid-1970s when funds were put aside toward the establishment of a tertiary college to serve the Seventh-day Adventist Church island missions. And in 1977, plans were officially made to plan for it.
Site works began in 1980, and the development of roads, building sites, lakes, and a sewerage pond started the following year. Major building work was completed in 1984 and the site was officially opened as Pacific Adventist College.
From its first day, the college was successful in attracting students as well as experienced, qualified employees with some of the early high performing graduates going on to other universities for advanced education not being offered at PAC at the time. Very quickly, PAC graduates were being recognised throughout the South Pacific region.
From the college’s inception, students and staff were involved in meeting local needs such as running literacy programs, help in the growing of food crops, and domestic skills such as sewing, cooking and child care.
The Koiari Park campus became recognised as a very attractive destination for visitors who would sit under the rain trees by the lakes, enjoying its beauty and tranquillity and abundance of bird life.
In 1996, PNG parliament passed the Pacific Adventist University Act, when PAC was given university status and its name was changed to Pacific Adventist University (PAU).
Development has continued with additional land being added to the Koiari Park estate totalling 487 hectares, while buildings and additional courses have been added. PAU has continued to serve as the senior Adventist tertiary institution for the Pacific Island nations of the South Pacific. It currently has schools of business, humanities, education, theology, science and technology, health science, and postgraduate and research.
At the heart of our plan is a simple principle, educate to serve.
We want to focus on the future of PAU as we continue to prepare and educate world changers so they can continue to serve our communities across the Pacific nations.
Our student experience will be equal to the best in the world. Our range of programs will respond to the needs of the Pacific, and our culture will distinguish PAU from other universities. We will further develop its capabilities through infrastructure to build a vibrant university, increasing our program offerings in new areas such as lifestyle medicine, health programs and wellness.
We will continue to innovate and our research will contribute to solving problems in our society in both physical and digital spaces. We plan to further develop our farm and supplies to contribute to sustainable societies, and most of all we wish to serve our communities.
We want our campuses to be the best place to work and study, and a welcoming and safe place for all.
PAU will continue to attract talented people from other parts of the world, built on a commitment to quality as a platform for excellence and solve global problems.
My personal vision is that Pacific Adventist University is the best provider of quality Christian education through discovery, learning and experience in the Pacific.
