Course Overview

The B.Sc. (Hons) is a research Honours degree. Through a mentoring relationship, research students develop skills in analysis and presentation.
The B.Sc. (Hons) will attract students from a range of backgrounds and allow students to undertake research on the campus utilising its natural resources as well as supporting environmental projects. Areas studied would involve one or more of the following:

  • a systems approach to understanding the present and past interactions between the processes operating in the lithosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, and the perturbations of these systems by extraterrestrial influences
  • the scientific study of surface and near-surface physical, chemical, biological and anthropogenic processes operating on the Earth
  • modelling environmental phenomena
  • problem-solving related to environmental phenomena
  • the history of the Earth in the context of the period of human occupancy
  • the monitoring and management of natural and human-induced environmental changes
  • scientific examination of the implications of sustainability and sustainable development

At the end of the B.Sc. (Hons) programme graduates will:

  • have gained significant understanding in one or more of the areas listed above
  • demonstrate skill in critical evaluation through the planning and execution of a piece of scientific research;
  • demonstrate creativity and flexibility in the application of knowledge and be capable of using their powers of observation, analysis and imagination to make decisions in the light of uncertainty;
  • Be aware of areas for future research related to the topic.

This course will allow the student to focus on research in a specific field in readiness for professional service.
